Was just settling down to some of Mrs Sultan's delicious home cooked noodles with chicken cooked in black-bean sauce when i thought i might just switch over from LBC to catch Five Lives' preview of Euro 2008 instead.
All going rather swimmingly until they introduced their "expert".
None other than the Wally with the Brolly!
I just got straight up and switched off the radio in disgust.
I don't know was more perplexing, the fact that this individual, having failed us with his poor tactics and rank bad team selection has the gall to stand up there and broadcast on this of all tournements or that the BBC is giving him poll-tax payer's money for his 'expertise'
Maybe there is room for him in the media some time. Graham Taylor has become rehabilitated after all. However, at least he had the decency not to be around during USA '94 and had actually enjoyed a modicum of success at club level.
As Harold McMillan famously said to John Profumo " A long period of silence from you would be much appreciated."

I think, Sultan, you're being a bit hard on McClaren.
He's been made a scapegoat by certain people in our wonderful media who pander to the presumption that England have the quality to be a major force in world football. But anybody who remembers the England team's mind-numbing performances in the last World Cup should swiftly be disabused of that notion! McClaren had to pick up the pieces after that. Evenso, were it not for the third goal that Croatia scored at Wembley last November, England would have qualified for the European Championship at Russia's expense.
McClaren may be dour and unimaginative - but he has recent experience of international management, is reasonably articulate, and won't say anything to frighten the horses. In other words, a safe choice as a pundit on the Beeb.

As soon as I saw the subject of this thread, I immediately guessed that it was a Sultan Rant before I even looked at the author's identity ;D

Tbh the English media and fans bought the whole Steve 'You can stand under my Umbrella, ella, ella a, a' McClaren fiasco upon themselves by demanding an English manager to succeed Sven. Unfortunatly for them the best qualified man for the job was McClaren. It's all well and good producing supposedly world class players, but if you have no managers coming through, you're on the road to ruin.
One thinks that like Taylor in 1994, he should try and get back into club management ASAP.

What world class players are those that we produced? It would appear to me that the much-maligned "shagging swede" got England to massively OVER achieve by reaching the quarters of three major tournements. Blame the FA for trying to get Sven's replacement sorted out before the end of the last World Cup when nobody wants to unsettle themselves or their team. They wound up like the sex-pest at a disco circling round and round the dance floor asking progressively rougher birds for a dance before, finally finding one as ugly, stupid and desperate as himself to say yes. In TWWTB's position, i would have been too embarrased to contemplate "working" that of all tournements. BTW, Amber, RANT? ? ME? I give cool, reasonable and logically argued opinions.... ;D

World Class?
The Netherlands so far at the Euro's are World Class, i watched the highlights tonight and practically exploded with joy at their brilliance.
Franz Beckenbaur, Pele, George Best, Paulo Maldini, Ryan Giggs, Gary Lineker, Eric Cantona, Gordon Banks, Neville Southall, Eusebio, Ferenc Puskas, names that roll off the tongue of any football fan followed by memories of their genius. That's World Class. Not a single England player has come close this century.

Notice you had to sneak a Welsho in there! Surely John Charles is more worthy than the pie-eater?? I am really enjoying this tournament and it's because England are not there! We can be nicely objective - and if there's a debate to be had it must be whether our mollycoddled underachievers / overachievers would have done a Netherlands, or a France! Despite the stick he gets, I would honestly add Becks to your list Mr Meds - really I would.

Oh dear bob in heaven, who let that dour, depressing, charismaless burk have the keys to another dressing room? Is it not enough that he brought a new level of mediocrity to the England manager's position? Why does he have to take charge at a team I've been following for 20 some years (my family have friends in Enschede)?
