We also had the saga of the road where the signs at the opposite ends of the street were spelt differently. This is a very minor one and a matter of punctuation, but there is a road very near me called St James Road. However, at the other end it's called St James' Road. That apostrophe could make a lot of difference to St James! Is it his road, or merely a road named after him?

St James' Road suggests that it's owned by more than one St James.

Not necessarily, but it's a point worth considering! I believe that either "St James'" or "St James's" is considered correct for the singular. Not entirely sure now. Where's that damned journalist gone?

AA is right with his use of gentle implications there. Personally I've always preferred the more rugged stamp of the "S'S" thing, in that it leaves no ambiguity. I'm sure Saint Agnes's Way would be more specifically identifying her own Oddysey, or lifestyle towards achieving a place in heaven, rather than a cul-de-sac (sharing/exploiting her name) built on a flood plain near Gloucester, for example.

My favourite road name is Watch Close in Coventry.

In Castle Vale in Brum they have named an estate's roads after World War II things (Blenheim Way, Lancaster Drive, that sort of thing), all very nice except that someone decided it would be a fine idea to name one of the walkways:
Douglas Bader Walk.

Oh dear!
There's a road in Sutton called Wings Close; all one has to do is remove the C for guaranteed victory over Welling United.

LOL! All good stuff. I wonder if Bader also has a Dance Hall named after him... There's a Howe Close in New Milton.

There's a Leslie Gardens near me too; I've always wanted to write "So does Heather" underneath, as there is a Heather Gardens off the next road!
That reminds me; I once saw a sign that said "ORCHARD GARDENS - No Through Road" but the whole of the left hand side was broken off and what it actually said was "HARD GARDENS- Rough Road" ;D

the whole of the left hand side was broken off Hmmmmm.... They install especially weak signs just near where you live, do they.....? No chance you mightn't have hastened its partial demise on the way home one night?

Whoever did it aleas showed some imagination, all we've had near us recently was an extra letter unfortunately added to the start of great name of the village of Uckington.
There probably are a fair few silly signs around Telford, I just can't think of them right now.

I've recently harboured a desire to remove certain letters from the beginning and end of the sign for Lightwater...

Canal Street in Manchester had the C and the S crossed out. ;D
(As a learned bunch I'm sure you all know that it is the main gay district of Manchester)

At my old uni the roads on campus are rather unimaginatively named after the buildings on them, and Arts Road always used to have other letters, such as T or F, stuck on the beginning

I wonder if 'Homophones' stalk Canal Street looking for argy-bargey? [or an Argie Bargee, if you work a narrowboat on the River Plate... ]
