You've made THREE mistakes on this thread, actually Dave! 1) Wrong beer 2) Wrong spelling of "abominable" 3) Saying you've only made one mistake ;D The City fans sang a tribute to my sister and her boyfriend midway through the second half..... "Is she really going out with him?" Damn, should've thought of that one the other week ;D ;D Why shouldn't she be going out with him? Have I missed a joke? *scratches head* Who were you going to sing it to, Botty? Amber is very slow today because of being snowed under by Supporters' Trust membership forms. This is a good thing, but...aaargh!

I must say that having draught GFB was an unexpected bonus, and in some ways I would have like to have enjoyed more than I did. Alas at my age if I'd too many I would not have made the open day. Mind you if they'd have had Extra Stout on, who knows?!?!! HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, when can I visit the Sultan again? ? (Hop Back pub, ten minutes from where I sit in Wimbedon at the moment!)

Oy! Will you quit it with the age related thing! ;D Amber. Tell him. He's not old! Any pub within a ten minute walk of your current location, that serves Hopback beers should be frequented with a fervent frequency as befits the brew in question.

Check out the Sultan's beer festival on 22-24 September. A few users of this forum have already expressed an interest. Friday night is best as the beer starts to run out on Saturday! Address: 78 Norman Road, South Wimbledon SW19. Ten minutes' walk from Colliers Wood or South Wimbledon on the Northern Line.

There's actually a new HopBack beer called Moderation, saw it for the first time when we were in the Wyndham with the amber and choccy boys last saturday. Like a more fruity Crop Circle. One of our lot, Pinky, despite being a confirmed lager drinker had some cos it had a scooter on the pump-clip (he being an ex-mod). Blames his sickness that night on the couple of those he had rather than the dozen Fosters.

Saw that too, never got round to having any though. No idea why.
I wasn't sick personally but interestingly whenever i've been forced to dring lager recently my body seems to reject it's chemically nature (wondering why it's getting alcohol but no ale-y goodness) and gives me grief in the form of an annoying if not that painful chemical feeling headache.
Which would be fine if it got me as drunk as my usual ales but it doesn't do that either.

There's a good reason why lager is more likely to give you a headache. The vast majority of lager sold in the UK hasn't been properly lagered, i.e it's only fermented for a week or two. But lager is a bottom-fermented beer, which means that the yeast sits at the bottom of the fermenting vessel, where's there's not much oxygen, and so needs a long time to convert the sugars into alcohol. People who want to brew proper lager (principally the Germans and the Czechs) allow at least a month for fermentation, and sometimes three or four. The multinational brewing companies operating in the UK want to cut costs by increasing throughput, and so trim the fermentation period to the bare minimum. As a result, some of the bigger sugar molecules - and various impurities that the yeast will clean up given enough time - remain in the lager when it's sold to the happy punters. It's this stuff that gives you a "chemical" headache (and, incidentally, those big sugar molecules readily convert to fat, so lager is more likely than real ale to make you put on weight). Here endeth the chemistry lesson.
