We played a PSF at Winchester City last night. It was tinpot.
Their terraces are even more tinpot than this one. But their club shop was the best, most tinpot one I've ever seen. It was, basically, a caravan - the sort of one you get as a "static" at a holiday park - painted in their colours of red and black. It appeared still to have its original windows and doors. The main room was the shop itself, which aside from having a truly excellent programme collection and lots of tinpot merchandise, also had a corner stuffed with ancient books about sports and sports statistics from the mid-20th century, and a big, VERY well equipped pick-'n-mix - a veritable sea of sweeties. The blokes who ran it were superb. In the other room (formerly a bedroom), was the tannoy bloke and his equipment - a peek inside revealed that it still had the caravan's original furnishings (built-in wardrobe, chest-of-drawers and, perhaps, a pull-down bed in the corner). The tannoy bloke himself was rather tinpot, and as I left the shop assuring them that I would tell my friends about the sweets and they would soon arrive (it was half-time), he put a message out saying "Anyone feeling peckish, please come to the Club Shop for the finest pick-'n'-mix in Hampshire." Later, he announced a quiz at the club, and I overheard someone asking him to announce it about thirty seconds later (not having heard the original announcement) and the tannoy bloke went, "I've just done that! All right, then" and then switched on his mic again and went, "For the benefit of Stuart, the club quiz is on..."
Bless him!
Has anyone ever been in a more tinpot club shop?
