I'm not going to clog up the poppy thread with this (and in fact I'm not even sure whether I ought to bother at all, but here we go anyway)
1. I categorically did not use any such premise. If you're taking the line "If I may put my historian hat on for a minute..." is supposedly trying to big myself up then you're a very touchy person indeed. That was simply my way of showing that I was going to move the debate off topic and debate against someone's view of the history; I didn't suggest that I was an expert other than in my capacity as a student of history, something that was more implicit than explicit in the post.
2. Which beliefs did was I trying to undermine? I wear a poppy, I respect the work of the British Legion and the Armed Forces, who have no choice over their usage, and I observe the remembrance ceremonies.
If by offering an alternate opinion on the historical context of two wars constitutes undermining peoples' beliefs then I suppose anyone who has ever talked about history is an immature person of questionable morality.
If you're saying that by expressing my opinion that soldiers in the First World War did not die for our freedom I undermined people's beliefs, then all I can say is that it is just an opinion, presented as such, with an attempt at giving a little bit of evidence to back it up. You are free to accept or reject it. That's the nature of debate and I didn't think that certain subjects were sacrosanct. Isn't that what our servicemen intend to defend while they're doing their jobs?
Now, this in itself is probably (in fact after a read through is almost definitely) an immature reaction to your post. However, I don't care. If you want to disagree with my opinions then that's fine, but being condescending and personal isn't. At least I don't think so.

Regardless of whether it's matriculation, paid research, unpaid research, amateur interest etc In my opinion you used the premise of your perceived 'higher understanding' to undermime peoples' strongly held beliefs and principles which in my opinion only endeavours to depict you as a very immature person. That's all I have to say in response.1. I categorically did not use any such premise.
