Just ask because i had to access TT from elsewhere yesterday and having not commited the address to memory, just googled it. As expected, the top answer was "Tinpot Terrace - Home" but i was taken by surprise to see that second ranked answer was "Tinpot Terrace - View Profile: Sultan of Cannock SRFC" Is this a general thing for everyone or are google answers somehow tailored to the making the inquiry these days?

Spooky. I just got the same result as you, Sultan. You're being stalked.

If you just type into the Google search bar, you only need go as far as 'Tinpot te' to get here, although that maybe Google making use of my personal data to work it out...
The second search result for our Sultan is an example of Google 'monitoring' what he does online. It knows who he is, what he searches for and how, and will frequently put 2 and 2 together to create 5 in the guise of being helpful.
It's quite frightening how much personal information is out there floating in cyberspace. How many of you logged on to Facebook for the first time and found it populated with tens or hundreds of people you know? And that's before you've provided them with any real information!

Why is it that the police have to wait until they take their computers in for repair to catch internet paedophiles then? Are Google et al. not allowed to give their Big Brother-esque data away, or is it just sitting on some server somewhere waiting to be used by a computer to tailor our searches to our preferences?

They're not. The Police aren't allowed to use any information outside of HOLMES or investigation for various reasons, they're even not allowed to use other government databases. Also have you actually read 1984? Big Brother doesn't actually have that sort of information on file for his citizens. He just spies on them.

That's the main reason i don't register on facebook. Yhere are quite a number of people in my past who i ferventley hope to keep there rather than in my present or future. I remember seeing the film version of 1984 with the Eurythmics soundtrack. John Hurt played Winston just the way i'd imagined the character when reading the book and Suzanna Hamilton stripped naked....

[ Yeah John Hurt got it spot on, I agree. From the look on Suzanna's face i'd say that he got it pretty much on the spot, too
