I know Frankiegth is in a fairly similar predicament at his place of work but it appears that i have "got there" first.
With all the shennanigans over the sudden accelaration/brake failures surrounding Toyota this year ( which, incidently, have been reported by the Wall Street Journal This Morning as down to driver error after NASA evaluated the black-boxes which are fitted to cars by law in the USA) coupled with the general slow down in the economy this last couple of years, the company have been requesting around 850 voluntary redundancies.
Having turned 50 this year and knowing what a pain in the butt trying to get another job is going to be at my age, i wasn't eager to join the exodus. However, with the physical restrictions placed on me by a minor operation 4 years ago, i have been made aware that when our section contracts there will be nowhere for me to go. So the choice is either to walk away with a years pay in my back pocket now, or wait for the company to take the "reduced flexibility" route and ease me out on medical grounds for considerably less money come Xmas.
Therefore, bar a miracle and me being found an alternative office/laboratory niche, i will be finishing with Toyota on September 30th. I suppose i can't complain too much. The terms are generous considering i only had six years service and who knows what good things may be around the corner.
If sometime in the near future, though, you happen to go to a supermarket somewhere in the West Midlands and you are accosted on the carpark by a bespectacled, grey-haired old gentleman asking "excuse me, have you finished with that trolley?" smile sweetly at him and give him a £5 tip..... he might just be me!!!!
