1) Did my Fire Marshall course last week. Part of this included "first-aid firefighting" in the use of extinguishers. I'd been looking forward to this having not picked one up in anger since quitting the BASF fire team in the mid eighties. Sadly, although i did get to let off a couple of extinguishers, due to "elf 'n safety" we weren't actually allowed to have a fire to put out.

Last time I did fire training we were shown (for the umpteenth time) how to use fire extinguishers of varying type, then were told in no uncertain terms that we should never use them and that if there were a fire we were to get straight out of the building regardless of whether we judged the fire small enough to extinguish ourselves.

If you hit the fire with the wrong type of extinguisher you can actually make it worse. Bearing in mind that the fire doubles in size every 10 seconds while you check you've got the right one then best to make sure the alarm is raised, everyone is out and the door closed.
You still need to know how to use an extinguisher because they should be placed at strategic points along your escape routes. If the fire encroaches between you and the exit you may need to grab one to clear yourself a path to get out.

Yeah, that's what we were told. I think I know more about extinguisher types etc from the Guides than from any formal training course, though
