The American company The Honest Company launches a new benefits policy for new fathers and mothers, who starting next year will enjoy 16 weeks of paid work leave. The new policy applies to both men and women and will go into effect in January 2016. The consumer goods company, which has been in business for three and a half years, currently offers new parents 10 weeks of paid leave. The company's co-founder, actress Jessica Alba, made the announcement last Thursday at Salesforce's Dreamforce conference in San Francisco. Alba shared the news during a panel where several topics were touched on, including work-life balance and diversity in the technology industry. "It is necessary to take that time to establish a bond with the baby, it is also important for men to create that emotional bond with newborns," said Alba, who is a mother of two children.
Honest Company began operations in 2012 offering eco-friendly baby products and has since expanded its portfolio to include a wide range America Mobile Number List of products. Last week, she launched Honest Beauty, a line of cosmetic and skincare products. The company's website states that it does not use "chemicals or compounds that compromise health," but it recently received complaints from some dissatisfied consumers. Customers complained that Honest sunscreen did not provide enough protection, and posted images online of injuries caused by sun exposure. Additionally, a lawsuit was filed this month accusing Honest of falsely claiming that its products are "natural." The lawsuit also claims that the brand's sunscreen did not work.
In response to the lawsuit, Alba said in a statement to CNNMoney: "The accusations against us are baseless. "We firmly defend our products and the responsibility we have to our consumers." Paid parental leave for new parents has gained prominence recently. Earlier this week, professors from some of the top business schools in the United States signed a letter to the US Congress calling for the passage of legislation that would create a national program to fund paid family leave. The United States is the only developed country without a formal paid parental leave policy for new mothers. Until now, companies act according to their own criteria when deciding whether to grant their employees such paid leave. Recently, the technology industry has led the way in improving maternity and paternity benefits. New moms at Microsoft, for example, will be able to take up to 20 weeks of paid leave, while Adobe announced a new policy allowing up to 26 weeks of paid leave. Along the same lines, Netflix announced that all new parents will be able to take unlimited paid time during the first year of the baby's arrival.
