This is what supporting a non-league team is all about:
Birmingham Senior Cup
Solihull Moors 2 Coventry City (including eight first teamers and four internationals) 1
On a night of torrential rainfall Solihull Moors matched Coventry City man for man, kick for kick, tackle for tackle for the first half hour until Julian Gray scored a cracking goal to give the visitors the lead on the half hour mark. Many thought the floodgates would open to match the weather but The Moors seemed to find even more strength and resolve to put Coventry under the cosh for much of the rest of the half.
Half time: Solihull Moors 0 Coventry City 1
The second half was similarly exciting with The Moors giving Coventry, watched by Ian Dowie, a roasting, cutting through the championship side's defence like a hot knife through butter, only last ditch defending and wayward finishing preventing the equaliser, which inevitably arrived on the hour mark, courtesy of Moors' striker Dale Anderson. Coventry, for all their classy keep ball couldn't prise open The Moors' magnificent defence and a mistake on 70 minutes by Coventry's ex-Welsh international defender Robert Page left his keeper, Danny Ireland, exposed to bravely dive at the feet of The Moors' Anderson and Jakab on the edge of the area, the ball ricocheting between the three of them before finding its way back to Anderson who calmy slid it home. Eruptions of joy for the home fans, bitter recriminations for the Coventry defence. Page even had a go at the home supporters, an unedifying sight, a professional footballer on at least 250 grand a year swearing and making obscene gestures to spectators. I hope Dowie caught sight of that. Try as they might Coventry, who had even been time wasting in the first half, were now playing fast, slick football but were unable to manufacture an equaliser during the final twenty plus four minutes, indeed Moors could have increased their lead on several occasions.
Final Score: Solihull Moors 2 Coventry City 1
Unfortunately Robert Page continued to disgrace himself after the final whistle by approaching the Solihull Moors fans and threatening violence in the car park in ten minutes time. This continued during Coventry's warm down, their coach making no attempt to prevent Page from threatening the Moors' fans. What a professional tosser.
Coventry's first teamers:
Julian Gray
Ellery Cairo
Arjan de Zeeuw
Robert Page
David McNamee
Michael Hughes
Kevin Kyle
Kevin Thornton
We now face Birmingham City in the next round, oh joy.
