When reading the first of these bloody Harry Potter books out aloud to Smalldude many moons ago it struck me that the hero bore a passing resemblence to leading Hitler henchman Heinrich Himmler. Potter has a pet owl called Hedwig. I read an article in the paper yesterday that Hedwig was also the name of Himmler's mistress! Given the Nazi's love of the occult, is JK Rowling using these books as a vehicle to venerate the Third Reich? We need to be told the truth.....

Can't speak for Harry Potter himself, but Daniel Radcliffe who plays him in the films annoys the hell out of me.
When I saw this title I thought this would be one of those topics where there is a quote from random fundie telling us the evils of the book once again. As a Christian I can assure you that 99.99% of us realise that Harry Potter it's just a book (or seven).
Interesting idea though, perhaps JK Rowling has had a hidden agenda with this series the whole time...

Harry Potter is evil. I've not read any of the books, but the movies have been rubbish. This Nazi link only confirms what i've always believed.

Please remember kiddies, young and not so young; you are welcome to express a personal opinion about a book, a film etc as long as you make it clear that it is just an opinion. I'm not even remotely aware of any debate about any religious (pro or anti) leanings, but... It is probably not a good idea to make suggestions or allegations which cannot be substantiated; or are not clearly marked as humorous or an opinion - and smilies don't always demonstrate that to the max.

As if by black magic...an ad for the new (tin)Potter film appears at the head of this thread!

Sorry, what I meant was of the people I know I'm yet to find anyone who has really complained, just the odd person writing an article claiming it is evil.

I know of a few evangelical Christian groups who consider books about the 'Dark arts' (such as Harry Potter) evil, and ban their young'uns from reading them, or watching TV shows and Movies based on them.

Loved to hear about this juicy little conspiracy theory. I hope someone with a vivid imagination like Dan Brown or Michael Moore will look into it further and really whip things up, but sadly I doubt there's anything more sinister in Potter than the profit motive..... So a perfect partnership there, then! Can't agree with you on the films thing, namesy! When I was a kid growing up, I had to make do with such (relative) cinematic treats as "Pete's Dragon", Blackbeard's Ghost", "Tarka The Otter" and "Ring of Bright Water" - at least until George Lucas came along, anyway. Having seen the Potter films with variously-aged nieces & nephews, I was utterly blown away to think how much film and entertainment has moved on in one generation... and hopelessly jealous too! Even if it is indeed hard cash which generated the whole package - nay, industry! As for the Fundies, I think it really shows what a bankrupt account they are holding if they have to turn on a Kids' story to express their disgust! Can't we send them all to live somewhere with Islamist Fundies, so they can all 'discuss it rationally', along with the Creationists, Luddites, Neo-Nazis/Potterists et al? Australia's available, isn't it? ;D

How weird. The whole basis of Harry Potter is about him FIGHTING AGAINST the "Dark Arts." The Dark Arts are shown to be evil and something to fight against. I expect they see Potter's "good magic" as being just as evil because it's based on Godless miracles, and the fact that the books portray it as the good side probably gets up their noses.

Put it that way, and it makes you wonder what form of fit the Fundies would fly into if Rowling started a series of books based on the perspective of Malfoy or Voldemort... Surely the suppression of evil - however it is perceived culturally (and that is almost a universal 'given') - is the way to go? It'd take a sinister cult/movement/sect/type to oppose the opposers of evil, surely?

Shouldn't the fundies be more worried about Philip Pullman?

Shouldn't the fundies be more worried about Philip Pullman? Or Sybil Leek a few years ago? Had to Google P. Pullman. Never read his stuff, but am concerned that his childhood favoured reading list almost mirrors mine exactly. (I think I even remember the cartoon of the French girl in the cheap leather jacket.) Bung in Tintin, Asterix, Stig of the Dump, [Enid Blyton inevitably,] The Silver Sword (Ian Serraillier), the Lion, The Witch et al books, some WWII escape stories, Leon Garfield's Highwaymen and a few histories & biographies and I'm just about there! Give me a title and I'll surely be the next Dennis Wheatley?

Oh dear, I absolutely adored Asterix and read Stig of the Dump three times too! Never liked the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe though. It was too Christian for me
