Stafford Rangers parted company with manager Phil Robinson yesterday by mutual consent..
I'm a very big admirer of Robbo. I remember when he took over five years ago with basically a goalkeeper and a set of nets after Ian Painter defected across the chase. From that unpromising start what a time we had!!
There are some great memories there, with the cup run to Shrewsbury (who could forget the 5-0 win at Ilkeston on the way), the 3-0 pooping of Worcester's centenary party, the 5-1 demolition of Stoke in the SS Cup, feeling the presence of my late father's ghost at Vale Park when we did Leek Town ( he had a stroke soon after they robbed us in the trophy semi), the 2-0 at Scum Park in the promotion season when we literally rocked their stand behind the goal, seeing off Morecambe and FGR in the Trophy along the way, the play-off game, staying up against all the odds last season, which was, to my mind, given all the circumstances an achievement to match anything we did in the 70's.
I'm beginning to wonder, however, if my hero has finally shot his bolt. The magic touch seems to have gone, the miracles have dried up and we are heading back to where we came from at a rapid rate. There comes a time with many managers, that when they've been at a place for a certain length of time they just can't do any more and the harder they work the worse it seems to get. I fear that Robbo had, sadly, reached that tipping point.
Goodbye Robbo, thanks for the memories.

There comes a time with many managers, that when they've been at a place for a certain length of time they just can't do any more and the harder they work the worse it seems to get. Interesting and perceptive concept/theory you've identified there. Does it have a name? Is it a well-recognised phenomenon? I do sense that George Borg experienced this at Braintree recently - and left. I reckon it's the same effect which caused Doswell to 'move upstairs' at Eastleigh 2 years ago. I'm sure there are many other examples people can give. But then you get the likes of Stortford and Eastbourne with Managers who are far from stale after 8 years...
