On Saturday in out 3-2 win against Vauxhall Motors I witnessed what must be the weirdest games of football I have ever seen.
First half is relatively uneventful. Motors forward Paul Taylor had been deemed the danger man and as such Lee Vaughan had moved from his usual place as right wingback to central defence to mark him, which he did effectively on the whole. Taylor broke free long enough to slide 2-footed in on defender Jimmy Turner, missing the ball completely. Taylor somehow avoided the straight red he deserved and was simply shown the yellow card. Vauxhall were also fortunate not to conceed a penalty and another possible red when striker Matty Lewis was elbowed to the floor when threw on goal while also having a player avoid punishent for an off the ball kick when we were awarded a free kick. They did however perhaps deservedly take the lead when they scored. We were not playing well.
Second half we seemed to be getting back into the game a bit more before they scored on the hour. Shortly after this Vauxhall pressed the self destruct button by the looks of it. First midfielder Jonathan Egerton was booked for refusing to get out of the way of a Telford free kick. 2 minutes later Jonathan Egerton made a ridiculous above the knee challenge on Lee Vaughan, leaving the ref no choice but to produce a second yellow and send Eggerton off.
More drama was to follow. Following a goalmouth scramble Motors goalkeeper Andy Murphy punched striker Matty Lewis right in front of the referee. Again the referee had no choice but to brandish the red card. Vauxhall captain Tom Field then loudly called the referee "a ****ing cheat", "a ****ing idiot" and said he'd meet him in the carpark after the game. Oddly enough he followed his goalkeeper down the tunnel. With no keeper on the bench Vauxhall put a striker in goal. He did however save the penalty taken by Lee Moore.
With a 3 man deficit it was always goig to be an uphill struggle for Vauxhall. 3 goals in quick succession by Luke Reynolds, gary Fitzpatrick and Jimmy Turner in the 79th, 80th and 81st minute respectively turned the game on its head. With Vauxhall offering little in the way of a threat Telford spent much of the remaining time passing the ball around in Vauxhall's half and keeping posession, rather then risking a breakaway. There was still time for Vauxhall manager Andy Mutch to be sent to the stands for an attack on the Telford physio. With 1 minute of Injury time to go Vauxhall finished their self-destruction when Paul Taylor was shown a seond yellow and sent off for a shove on defender Asa Charlton. Taylor should if anything consider himself lucky to have lasted this long.
Overall in the end a win for the Bucks but a game which will be remembered for the away side seeing 4 red cards, giving up a 2-0 lead in the process. I once before this saw Colwyn Bay lose 3 players when we went there 3 years ago (Telford won 3-0) but 4 is a new record for me! this match kicked off early at 2pm at the request of Vauxhall so that they could get back in time for a Christmas party. For what it's worth I can't see that have being a particularly festive party following the match.
PS: Not bad for my 999th post.
