Oh don't be so melodramatic  No, really- it's not about erasing the history of Hayes, more being able to celebrate a shared history. Think of it as big Hayes swallowing up nasty Yeading After all it's Hayes & Yeading, not Yeading & Hayes. No, I can't be convincing  . Commiserations, Stephen. |

Merging two bitter local rivals is always contentious but it hasn't done the likes of Dagenham and Redbridge & Hinckley any harm in the long run.

I didn't know Dagenham & Redbridge were Hinckley's local rivals  Sutton United is also the result of a merger between two local clubs- rivals I don't know, it was 109 years ago and I wasn't available at the time. To be honest Stephen, from an outsider's point of view, it looks like a very logical step. Nick Bell seems to think so and he's a level-headed kinda guy who is Hayes through-and-through. That's not to say you're not entitled to your pissed off opinion, but I don't think it's the death of Hayes - more to the point I think it's the only way either club can sustain football at Conference South level.

True but Hayes fans prided themselves (Those of us that dedicated our spare time going everywhere to watch them - Including Newport on a freezing Tuesday evening!) on watching Hayes FC and the badge. Now we don't have Hayes FC, No news on what's happening to our Identity either.

Weston-super-Mare does look likely, yes If they reprieve a team then perhaps it could mean a reprieve for Scarbrough rather than WsM. Scarbrough finished 20th while WSM were 21st. Scarbrough also had more points tis season than WsM and Hayes. Depends on whether the decide to pool the teams and work it like that or if they keep it regional. Not sure which they'd go for. If Scarbrough were given a reprieve then a team from conf north would switch to the south to balance it out I guess. Might be easier just to keep WsM up though. |

This is what I posted on both the Hayes and Yeading message boards:
As someone who has gone through this type of merger with my football club, I'd like to say that you get back from this what you put in.
By that I mean that there will be many who say it's a disgrace and will not bother to watch the club again, and many will find any slim reason why this merger shouldn't have happened. the fact is it has happened and nothing you can say or do will change it, but if you stick with it, accept the club you love is no more, remember your history proudly, but look forward to the future, eventually you will realise that you are now creating new history for future generations to remember.
Any club is only as good as it's fans allow it to be, there should no longer be any 'them or us', and belive me I know it is difficult to stand side by side with people that were once hated as rivals, but the sooner you accept them as fellow fans the better it will be for your new club.
Personally I was a fan of Hinckley Athletic for nearly 20 years before our merger with Hinckley Town back in 1997. Atho played at Mid Alliance level and Town were Southen Midland, crowds were around 200 and 100 respectively. Look where we are now as Hinckley United only 10 years later - challenging for the Conference, crowds have trebbled and previous grounds sold to fund the Marston Stadium. It can and does work, not overnight but gradually and only if you yourselves put 100% in and support the club as you would support your own previous club.

Giggy, it makes perfect sense to me in a practical way if not in a sentimental one. It's a tough world this, and getting even tougher for non-league footy. Sometimes it's really sad but the only way forward is to think of the more practical things- if we tried to live on the sentimental even more clubs would disappear. Hayes and Yeading are very very close to each other geographically, have both been having problems with falling attendances, Hayes had just been relegated (and almost did the season before) although they did get a reprieve this year.
I'd be very surprised if they reprieved Scarborough, to be honest. It would mean moving the leagues around even more, and they've already confirmed who's going to be where

I thought that was the kind of thing you Londony non-league folk went in for, viz Walton& Hersham, Tooting & Mitcham, Leytonstone & Ilford, Dagenham & Redbridge, Epsom & Ewell, Marks & Spencer, etc etc. What next? Sutton & Carshalton Borough with nickname " Chocolate Robins?" |
