I've just remembered one other tinpot feature of our guest house in Peterborough - the hand-written notice on the inside of the front door. I can't recall the precise wording (though Sal may be able to) - but it was something very like: PLEASE KEEP THIS DOOR CLOSED AT ALL TIMES. IT IS AN INVITATION TO THE THIEF.

IT IS AN INVITATION TO THE THIEF. ;D Sorry to work through (and spoil?) the obvious, but a few observations come inevitably to mind: It's no good writing an invitation on the inside of a door which may sometimes be closed. There's only ONE thief in Peterborough? If they can identify 'The thief', [in that they clearly know how much 'he' loves a good invitation] shouldn't they be trying to apprehend him/her? If they're getting the attention of this known thief by keeping the door closed, why not just communicate with a mobile instead, like everyone else does? If this particular door is an invitation to the Thief, why not just give it to him, and buy another door for everyday entry/exit usage? Does The thief have a door fetish? I suppose an open door is easier to steal than a closed one. Reminds me of my visit to Mycenae, where Agamemnon lived in Western Greece. He came back home after 10 years away jollying it up at the Trojan war, and was drowned in his bath by his wife, Clytemnestra, barely minutes after getting home. After seeing the ruins, you walk down the hill to the car park, and are confronted by a sign outside a large modern house saying "Clytemnestra Guest House. All rooms with bath". Got the photo somewhere.

One thief in Peterborough there's only one thief in Peterborough
I took it to mean that keeping the door closed was an invitation to the thief, whom they were clearly trying to entice.

Is this thief of the type that wears a hooped shirt and a eye mask and carries a swag bag?

Speaking of sea-sickness and Pubs... I take it you're not allergic to sea voyages, Sir? Bit of a drawback if you're emigrating to a new 'continent'! Being ignorant, rather than funny, me, do they have any Breweries 'over there', or is it mostly ex-Hants brew they serve?

Goddards seemed to be the most common. But there's also the Ventnor brewery (where we stayed......well not in the bewery itself but only a couple of mins away), plus there's a brew pub down the road from Ventnor at St Lawrence
